All of my files that used to be .indd now appear as .pdf files, when I try to open them Acrobat gives me the warning that the file type is not supported. When I try to change the default program to indesign the computer simply ignores it and continues to try and open them with Acrobat. If I open the files through indesign the files appear as “Adobe Acrobat Document” but will open as a normal indesign document. When I save the document everything appears normal, I am saving them as indesign files, just as I always have, but as soon as they appear in the folder they are .pdf…

I have no idea what is happening. I did update to the new version of indesign last week but didn’t notice anything strange until this week.

I have never had this experience but can’t help wondering if the problem is not with InDesign but with your operating system. My guess is that for some reason its file recognition algorithms seem to have confused the two file types. Which platform are you on? Is your operating system up to date?

I am on windows 7 version 6.1. To be completely honest I am a mac user so I am not sure how to determine if my work computer is up to date…

Try this one: go to the windows explorer. Right click on a indesign file, this gives you the option “open with”. Click on the bottom option (default program …). This should open a panel with some programs … search for the Indesign.exe program and click on it, make sure you selected “always use this program to open…”. If all went OK, this should solve the problem.

When I do that the computer simply ignores my request to open the file with Indesign and attempts to open it with Acrobat. It will not even add indesign to the list of “recommended programs” or “other programs”
