How do I set a Paragraph Style that has multiple tasks, such as the following which is repeated for many different words in a Glossary?? Or am I forced to use a Character Style for the word (bolded, left, space after) and a Paragraph Style for the description?

      Bolded word here

Then an indented, regular descriptive sentence here and if it's two lines long, the second line will indent identically to the first line.

Doodlebug1, you'll have to create 2 para styles, one for the bold (call it bold) and one for the description.

The indent part can be made by setting the left indent to x (indents and spacing) in the second para style (call it descript), depending on what you want.

In your “bold” style, “general tab”, select the “next style” option and click on the second para style (descript) your created. That way, you can select the “bolded” word and the description with the text selection tool, right click on the “bold” para style and select the option “apply bold and then next style”.

This works if you example is correct, if you want to start the description AFTER the bolded word, and have the description on several lines, it's a different story.

You need to read up on the difference between Paragraph and Character styles. This

.. am I forced to use a Character Style for the word (bolded, left, space after) and a Paragraph Style for the description?

is not going to work. You clearly have two different paragraphs — InDesign considers everything that ends with a return a paragraph, even if it seems to you it's 'just a single bold word'. And a paragraph needs a paragraph style. Character styles do not allow “left, space after” settings.

As Gert says, create two paragraph styles (although I would strongly suggest a more descriptive name than “bold” ;) ) and use the “Next Paragraph Style” function to assign them quickly.

I do see what you Gert means, since with paragraph style on both, I can do space after and such.

      But I bees VERY confused!

I set up two paragraph styles: Glossary Bold (based on No Paragraph Style, bold, Left Justify) and Glossary Text (based on Glossary Bold, Font Regular, Left Indent .25).

I used the Glossary Bold to do as it say–make the word bolded, flush left. But when I use the Glossary Text on the description, it not only makes the first letter of the Bolded word HUGE, it takes away the bold in the first word.

Or, it will take the text down 3 spaces. When I try to move it back up, it makes the first letter of the bolded word HUGE.

What is going on??? This is text I copied and pasted to my document since I made the preset pages 50 pages too little.

Sounds like maybe you also have Drop Caps turned on for that paragraph style? Maybe there are some other local formatting styles applied, too? After applying the paragraph style, do you see a + symbol in the paragraph styles panel?

      I GIVE UP.

I am just going to have to individually bold each word, then press the space bar five times to indent the description…throughout the entire Glossary. This has been hell.

David, you were right!!!!!! I don't understand Drop Caps yet and apparently had it turned on to experiment.

Wait. Another problem. It's terrible teaching oneself all this with NO help. I so appreciate you guys

The Glossary Bold style worked. It's flush left, bolded. But after I did the Glossary Text style, both lines are indented to the right, but the first line is indented even more. How do I make them BOTH indented and on top of each other. I thought that “Left indent” did BOTH lines, and it is doing both lines, but the first line is indented even more, and I don't have it set that way.

Another another thing: if I have NO space after the bolded word, and try to use the Glossary Text style on the description….it indents the bolded word, too!! arghhhhhhhh

Gert, I need help from you: In my Glossary Bold style, I have it based on No Style, and the Glossary Text selected as Next Style. You then instruct me to select the bolded word and the description with the “text selection tool”. I have selected with the Selection Tool, the Direction Selection Tool and the Type tool and nothing like you said shows up when I right click the Bold paragraph Style.

D, several things, first make sure that there's a return after the bolded word, this should solve your indent problem. No space after the bolded word means you have filled in “0” in the “space after field” or, as I said, there's no “enter” after the bolded word. Since I don't have to source, it difficult to see what really happens. Check all the options in the para styles again.

The use of the “next style”: select the “type” tool (T). Select the text for BOTH paragraphs (the bold word and the description have to be selected – black background and white text). In the para style panel, DO NOT CLICK LEFT on the Glossary Bold style, but CLICK RIGHT, and you should see the option “apply “Glossary Bold style” then next style”. Make sure that the bolded word and the description consist of TWO DIFFERENT PARAGRAPHS, if not, just hit enter after the bolded word and try it again (after the bolded word, if you use “show hidden chars – type menu, last option), you must see a kind of “reversed P”.

Indesign is a wonderful program, but learning it takes some time and pls, forget the way “Word” works, as I always say:”Put your mind into the Indesign gear”.
