    I am comparing different platforms for remote users of InDesign projects. My company uses different freelancers and vendors to share InDesign files that have many Illustrator and Photoshop links. From the documentation it looks like Box allows one to work on an InDesign file without downloading all the links locally. Is this true? Has anyone worked with Box? How does it compare with using InDesign files stored in Google Drive? Thanks in advance for the advice.

    If you’re trying to connect InDesign with assets that are “in the cloud” (not on local hard drives) then you’ll likely need something like Connector from Silicon Publishing: https://www.siliconpublishing.com/products/products_connector.html

    But even then I don’t think the InDesign files themselves are in the cloud. Those are saved locally, I believe.

    We use dropbox for sharing InDesign files.

    Webdam, Widen, Bynder, MediaValet, Brandfolder, PhotoShelter, are six examples of cloud-based DAMs that will take you much further in a creative workflow than Dropbox or Box.

    All six benefit from a Silicon Connector providing true URL-based linking. As David mentions, we have a unique solution that makes cloud-based workflows very effective with InDesign:

    While we have yet to build such a connector for Dropbox (I’m sure we will some day), we do have one for Box:

    Dropbox and Box both work great for exchanging files, yet both are limited in terms of true asset management and robust support for creative workflows. While we do offer connectivity to Box that is used widely and improves lives of designers, when people ask us “tell us how Box is the best solution for creative workflows?” we tell them honestly, no, choose a cloud DAM. We’d say the same about Dropbox.

    Once I asked the Box COO “hey, you have an awesome storage system, why don’t you add the 15% more functionality you’d have to in order to make it a functional DAM?” and he replied “hey when you have 20 million users” (this dates me) “you find yourself ruling all sorts of niches you know nothing about.”

    InDesign now works great with Box. Plugins are no longer needed.

    I second this. I use Box & InDesign daily without any issues.

    Did you keep the Box drive folder in the default location? And are you working solo with all linked assets in the same folder?

    I have Box Sync set up to sync to an external SSD hard drive so that I don’t need to worry about the amount of space it uses on my computer. I work with a team of people and we have the assets available in a shared folder on Box
