Hello — I’ve been having this problem with InDesign. ID 14.0.2, Mohave 10.14.4. … The cursor keeps getting stuck on the hand tool and once that happens, I have to quit InDesign to get any other tool. Very frustrating. Seems random. I haven’t selected the hand tool, but my cursor just decides to change to it, and then that’s the tool it stays stuck on until I restart InDesign. Sometimes I have to restart the computer to get InDesign to let me use any other tool. I’ve reported it in the Adobe uservoice forums and so have a number of other people, since December 2018. Is there any other way to report this to Adobe? This really needs to be taken care of – very disruptive to a busy workflow!

I’m using InDesign 2017 on High Sierra and this problem just began. Restarting InDesign doesn’t help, nor does restarting my mac!
      Somebody, please help!

Have you tried resetting your InDesign preferences? Launch InDesign and immediately hold the control+command+shift+option keys. A dialog will appear asking you if you are sure that you want to reset all of your preferences, click “Yes” and see if that helps.

And try updating your InDesign – it’s an old version your using :)

Thanks for the suggestion of resetting preferences — I wish it had helped.
My OS is up to date and so is my version of InDesign – I reset the preferences and that has not made any difference. It’s a very random occurrence that I haven’t been able to link to any particular action in InDesign. When it happens, it is very frustrating, though!
      Still no help from Adobe.

I just upgraded to CC 2019, reset the preferences and the hand tool is still there.
Frustrating! I can’t use InDesign at all. Unless someone can offer me a workaround.

What if, instead of clicking the Hand tool in the Toolbox, and then dragging…what if you hold down the Space Bar, and then drag around the page?

Hmmm… I honestly don’t know. What an incredibly frustrating bug! If I were in your shoes, my next action would be to reinstall InDesign all together. I know it’s time consuming but then again, so is dealing with this issue while you are trying to hit deadlines!

I wish I could be more help

Does anything in this article by Steve Werner help?

Thanks, David – I had read that post before, but because it is over 10 years old, I dismissed it as too out of date. But I’ll try starting in Safe Mode and seeing if that clears anything up, and some of the other things Steve suggested. For me, the problem appears so randomly, and I never know when it will happen again. I work all day every day except Sunday with InDesign, and it hasn’t happened for about a week now. So we’ll see. Thank you for helping!

      Resolved!
The good news is, Adobe fixed it. I went to their website, got a live chat, and the tech offered to fix it.
The bad news is, it took her forever! She requested control of my screen which I gladly gave, but watching her do the fix was painful. Either her connection was slow, or she’s not very adept at mac. She said she’s resetting the preferences (which I had already done). I didn’t pay close enough attention to repeat all her steps here, but it seems to me she stopped all Adobe activity in the activity monitor window. Then she played with permissions of various folders.
I just wish she had given me instructions and let me do it myself.

The crazy thing is, this symptom just showed up on a different mac here, and I’m beginning to suspect it’s the keyboard brand I’m using. We have the Macally keyboards.
I guess I’ll keep you updated.

I have had the same problem, but it started in Illustrator, and then migrated to InDesign.
I did get lucky in that restarting returned my life to normal. I have the most up to date InDesign and Illustrator, but I’m only running Sierra (at the limit of my current workstation).

I discovered that if the hand tool bug appears, I can hit the space bar a few times and it returns to normal. Go figure!

Has anyone come up with a solution since the last time we “spoke”?
Problem occurred again. Grace, when it happens to me, and it just began again, it’s not random at all, and hitting space bar does not help.
I trashed my prefs which didn’t help.
      Any suggestions out there?

Just had the same issue and resolved it on the Mac.
There is a shortcut conflict with Spotlight. Command-space bar is also used by Spotlight.
Jump to your System Preferences – Keyboard – Shortcuts. Select Spotlight and deselect Show Spotlight search (command-Space)
      Using Mac High Sierra 10.13.6
      Hope this helps someone…

Thanks for trying. No, I turned off that shortcut long ago.
It’s really weird – the problem just disappeared.
I suspect it’s related to screen sharing, which I haven’t done in a while.

Hi – Because of a disappearing font issue with CC2020, I went back to using InDesign CC2019 6 months ago and the hand tool bug came back. I’m on Mohave 10.14.4 on a late 2014 iMac Retina with 24GB ram, using a USB extended Mac keyboard. I turned off the Spotlight shortcut and I still occasionally get the hand tool bug, but if I hit the space bar a few times, and click my USB Shhhh gaming mouse in random places, it resolves. There doesn’t seem to be any particular thing I’m doing that triggers it — it is super random. But since I don’t have to quit InDesign and relaunch, or shut down and restart, I’m living with it. Fortunately it only happens about once a week or so lately. I usually run InDesign with Photoshop, Acrobat, Word, and Firefox running in the background, in case that makes a difference. Not resolved.
