Grey gridlines appear in transparencies

Hi there… I’ve been having a problem with gridlines of some sort showing through any areas of transparency. This could be a photo screened-back or just in the area of a drop shadow or feathering. When I turn on the baseline or document grid to see if it’s related, the lines don’t match up so I don’t know where it’s coming from. My only work around is to place a white rectangle between the background and the object I’m making transparent.

Any ideas? I’ve just updated to CC 2017 and had CS3 before – so I might have done something wrong.

      Thanks so much,
      Paula

Hi … can anyone help please? I’m really worried about sending my files to the printer in case I’ve missed any transparent spots and the lines show through. It’s a high-end book with photos. Every document I open is the same with the lines showing up in drop shadows or gradients. I can send an image if there’s a link somewhere.

      Thanks so much!
      Paula

Post a link to your image using a host such as https://imgur.com. Otherwise the only thing I can think of is to make sure you have no Spot Colors in your document.

      Hello Colleen,

Thanks so much for your reply! I’ve posted a sample to this page:

That is very baffling! But the lines go away when you have Preview mode turned on, right? Do they show up when you export a PDF or any other kind of file? I strongly suggest sending PDF files to your printer (not your InDesign files), so if they aren’t in the PDF, then it’s probably fine.

You’re sure these aren’t document or baseline grids? Or just page rules? Something on the master page?

Thank you for your reply, David. It’s a baffling one for sure…and rather frustrating. I was so happy to have my new version of Indesign after all these years with CS3.

I have converted the file to PDF and the lines disappear and do not print. Which is wonderful, but they continue to appear in other formats such as jpeg.
Nothing is on the master pages. I’ve started with a fresh file a few times.
I’ve posted a link showing how the document and baseline grids overlap. The first line aligns with the baseline but the following ones do not. (The button “Align first line to baseline grid” was turned off however.)

I guess my next step is to contact Adobe?

Thank you for your help and any other ideas!

Paula, can you send me a small file with this problem in it? Just email the file to me at david at indesignsecrets dot com. I’m so curious now…
