I was trying to do a find between to select some variable text that ALWAYS appears between two sets words. WIth line breaks in between.

It would appear like this ..

      Shoer

      VARIABLE TEXTr

      Width:

So I did a find in between using a positive look ahead and look behind.

      (?<=Shoer)[lud. ]+(?=rWidth:)

Which returned a big fat nothing.

I suspect the end of paragraph “r” have something to do with it. I know you can use $ to indicate to go to the end of a paragraph but that isn't working either. Is this a limitation of this function in GREP or am I just missing something.

Anyone have any ideas. I have a kluge workaround I am using because this project was dropped in my lap midday Friday and needs to be turned in tomorrow morning first thing.

But I would really like to understand where I went wrong so I can used this in the future.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Damn all of my slashes disappeared. Any idea how to make those work in this forum?

the answer to the slash question is to type them twice… Still not sure what you are asking. It might be better to set your paragraph sytle up to be the “variable text” format and then use grep styles to format the stuff that isn't variable. I am thinking that you are trying to automatically style the “Air Ring Leader” Text? Maybe you could send me a file and I could check it out.

Also this might be better suited for a Next Paragraph style…

P1) Shoe Type – Next style “Shoe Name

P2) Shoe Name — Next Style Shoe Discription

P3) Shoe Discription with Nested character stlyle BOLD through “:” — next style SAME

      Rydesign,

      Thanks for your response.

There are 165 pages like this one, the data is from a linked Excel file and flows from page to page using a Master Text Frames. Using the NEXT style would not work as I would have to create a DIFFERENT style for each line to make sure they cycled correctly.

      Inline logo-Next Style Shoe Type

      Shoe Type-Next Style Shoe Name

      Shoe Name-Next Style Width

Width – Next Style Construction, etc, etc, finally ending with the final “spec” line that has a next style of Inline Logo

I also have pages that have multiple widths and pages that have 2 of the same model with 2 different colors. There are FAR too many variable to use something that requires a predictable pattern. That is why I am wanting to use GREP. It is far more robust and flexible than either “Next” style of Nested Styles. Now that I know how to make sure my slashes appear correctly I'll rephrase my original question so that it is more clear.

Sorry I can't send you a file due to NDA policies here at work. Again thanks for the response.

I figured a couple of things out with this and am going to repost my question now that I have new information.
