The Greek accents I am having trouble with are mainly macrons (straight lines over o’s and e’s). They are not graphics, just manipulated characters. Years ago, because there were so many characters and accents that are not available in most fonts, I used special fonts early on, then discovered that Times New Roman was a Unifont with an extensive library including Greek and Hebrew characters. It is the only serif font I’ve found that has the letter with accent as one character. In order to make it work, the author/editor has to use one font for the body and then Times for the words that use the special characters, then select the correct characters in that font. Most importantly, I have to know this beforehand so that I can do a Find/Replace when I first set up the file. However, the result is either we set the entire book in Times New Roman (Yuck) or the specific words stand out in a different font.
On my current project the only accents are simple ones that I can fairly easily do and keep the same font throughout the book. So I have to type the letter, then select the accent. It sits in the space following the letter, so then I have to insert my cursor between the two and do minus letter spacing until they line up.
There has to be a better way to do this. Anyone have any ideas?
