function operands ( + – * / )

by utilizing the above listed operators, placed within certain fields, one can change/transform several different elements. example:
• moving a guide (from starting junction of 2.86) 2.86 -1 +.2 in gives final yield of (=2.06)
• similarly, one can utilize this approach for objects, page-sizes, whatever.

so … acceptable function “operators” would be the symbols (+ – * /) … can the symbols for square-root (?) and pi (?) also be implemented within these fields? if so, what is the correct syntax? because i have tried and failed. anyone else been successful? anyone else tried?

case in point … creating rectangle, and wish to change this element to circle … of course, one can utilize the elliptical-tool … one can also transform by going to object/convert-shape/ellipse … my goal is to transform using mathematical operands.

not really interested in doing this with grep* or plug-ins/scripts … limitations involved.

i will try to attach a couple screen-caps to better illustrate my query, but there is no “posting methods” listed in the “forum/announcements” board … thanks. <i>A</i> A

pnamajck,

There is no way to use the control panel to convert a rectangle to an ellipse, as the dimensions you have control over are simply the x,y,h,w of the object. Even using the direct selection tool, you still only have control over the rectilinear dimensions. What you want to do is add Bezier values to the corners, changing the nature of the point and therefore the object.

Though this probably can be done with scripts, the only way to do this manually is as you described, using the convert shape menu. When using the control panel fields, you don’t have control over the ‘nature’ of the corner points or line segments, just their position and dimensions and other attributes like stroke, color, and some transformational properties (scale, shear, rotation, etc).

That said, if you want a simple method for making the conversion, perhaps assigning a keystroke to the convert shape menu item might help…

hey there, jake … really appreciate your in-depth approach … guessing you have tried all sorts of ways to work with the pi-symbol.

fwiw … there’s other software(preps) that i am exposed to everyday. that software allows me to create rectangle but not to create circle. same as indesign, it allows for the operands within the element’s field to adjust. and, to be fair, i utilize this feature throughout my day.

just thought it was worth a try, jake. and, if anyone else comes along … perhaps the knowledge will help them as well.

thanks again … mahalo.
