Frequent Crashing

I work at a creative agency with 6 other designers, and we all have problems with InDesign frequently crashing on our machines. It will often freeze and crash so many times that the only solution is for us to restart our computers. When this happens, sometimes we will lose all of our InDesign preferences, similar to if you do the shift-control-option-command shortcut when starting InDesign. It wipes the preferences, recently opened documents, any saved document presets, printing presets, etc.

Has anybody else had this problem? Is there any kind of solution?

What version of InDesign? What operating system (Windows or Mac)?

Is it the same file affecting all the machines, or can it be any file?

      Hi Dwayne,

We are all on Macs, and we are still running Adobe 2015, we haven’t gone up to 2016 yet. My machine specifically has the 2015.4 Release, 11.4.1.102 Build. This problem has persisted for years though, and I often used to update CC just to see if it helped but it never did.

It can be any file, and it happens at various times to various people – there doesn’t seem to be any kind of pattern at all, which makes it extremely difficult for me and my IT team to try and trouble shoot it.

      Thanks!

One of the first things I’d look for is if you have any third-party plug-ins/add-ons. For example, often people have a font management system (like Suitcase) and it may install a plug-in into InDesign. Then if you upgrade InDesign, you MUST upgrade the plug-in, too. Old plug-ins can cause terrible crashing.
