I am making an epub version of an indd document containing 27 chapters plus intro and end material. 438 pages.

I’ve been trying to find a way to format the TOC for a couple of days now and I’m still having problems

Each chapter is written by a different author and each chapter begins with (centred)

      Chapter III
      Chapter Title
      Author

      Using three different styles

In the TOC I want this to appear as

      III Author
      Chapter Title
      IV Author
      Chapter Title
      V Author
      Chapter Title

I have tried using text variables for the Chapter Numbers (section numbers) but cannot find a way to insert a Section Prefix in a TOC Style.
Also Do I have to give up the alignment of Author and Title given the tabs do not export to an Epub?

I also wondered about splitting the document into a Book of chapters, but I’ve not worked with an IND book before and is seesm a lot of work. I thought I should be able to get the chapter numbering in the TOC to work with sections?

An suggestions/advice would be much appreciated.

      Hey Jim,

I’m not sure this is possible within InDesign. I for one would love to have more TOC options that would allow this in both print and ePub export. The only way I can think to do it is by unzipping the ePub and doing it by hand.

      Thanks for the reply, Aaron.

After I posted the question, I realised that the order of teh three items in the book was the main problem

      Chapter III
      Chapter Title
      Author

The Author byline would always appear in the TOC after the Chapter Title becasue that’s the order in the book.

So if I was content with

      III Chapter Title
      Author

in the TOC, then I could get what I wanted with a TOC-Chap-with-Num style that was a numbered list using Roman Numerals.
And a hanging indent would give the alignment.

Funny how posting a question to a forum somehow clears the mind :-)

      Jim
