Im having a hard time formulating my question in a simple Google search, so I request some help here:

I want to align the second line of text for a long footnote to the tab in the line above. Adding another tab simply doesn’t cut it, because the footnote number adds space to it. I seem to be missing something. To illustrate, this is what I got

1.(TAB SPACE)footnote text footnote text footnote text footnote text footnote text
      footnote textfootnote textfootnote text

      This is what I want:

1.(TAB SPACE)footnote textfootnote texfootnote textfootnote textfootnote textfootnote
(TAB SPACE, ALIGN TO LIGN ABOVE)footnote textfootnote textfootnote textfootnote textfootnote textfootno

      Thanks in advance!!!

Either that or adjust the indents. For example, left indent of 1 pica, first line -1 pica.

In case Dwayne’s answer doesn’t make it clear, footnotes are paragraphs that behave much like numbered lists, and all the usual settings for paragraph styles apply. Go to “Type > Document Footnote Options…” and set the Paragraph and Character styles that fit your layout.
