Footnote spacing issue

      Hi,

My problem in short: footnotes have a certain leading through a para style, yet each individual footnote gets its spacing from something that is different than the para style leading, meaning: weird spacing between footnotes.

My footnote para style is set to 10 pt with a 12 pt leading and no alignment to grids. When viewing my doc in normal view I can see a sort of gridline aligned to the bottom of each footnote. The first line seems to have a larger leading than the following lines of each footnote. I honestly don’t know what how this works exactly, so some clarification would be very welcome. Especially some explanation that can help me get a presentation as if the footnotes were one piece of text with the same leading on each line.

      My footnote settings:

Example of footnote spacing with these settings:

      Thanks!

Do you have a little bit of space before or after the footnote in your footnote’s paragraph style.?

No space before or after in the para style. When testing it actually doesn’t even matter wether there is para spacing on the style, the footnote is restrained to the baseline I mentioned earlier, meaning that the next footnote does not react to settings of the one before it.

Do you apply a character style to the footnote numbers (using a nested style)? If yes, check that character style and make sure that it doesn’t set a leading bigger than the paragraph’s leading.

Wow, just wow…I found out where the issue comes from. Be ready to ROFL, the tab between footnote number and text had a override: font was 2pt bigger with auto leading. OMG, sorry for wasting your time. I was selecting either the footnote number or text to check the para rules, didn’t occur to me to select the whole thing.

^^I thought of that this morning when I was in the shower but you had already posted.

I swear–sometimes I do my best thinking when taking a my shower first thing in the morning.

        Glad you figured it out!

And don’t consider it wasting anyone’s time. You may have helped someone who is looking for the same answer and may come here looking for an answer.

Also–thanks for letting us know you figured it out. I think a lot of posters figure it out and never post back to let us know. Or never post back to acknowledge any advice that was given.

I agree. Sometimes I rack my brain to solve someone’s issue and I don’t get any response. Not positive nor negative. But in all fairness, usually posters to acknowledge the advice given.

Ari–certainly many do. But for some, I don’t know if the answer that was provided was correct, or if they even came back to see if the post was answered.
