      Hello!

I am having an issue I'm hoping someone can help with. We publish scientific manuscripts that are peer-reviewed using Word documents. The Word documents are then edited and assigned styles which are then imported into InDesign for layout.

The issue we are having is with Symbol font. We can't really control how symbols are inserted into Word and even if I tell the copy editors to do it a certain way, they won't change anything unless it doesn't show on their screen. In the past I solved this by installing both PS and TTF versions of Symbol on the InDesign machines (generally not the same machines as the editing machines).

This caused no problems with CS2, as far as I can tell because CS2 is not as strict about the font used (ie, TT Symbol = PS Symbol, more or less). But we recently have started transitioning to CS4 and we are having random issues with symbols not showing up in InDesign. As far as I can tell this depends on how the symbol was inserted into Word (whether or not InDesign can find the correct glyph or not… some don't have a code and some do).

I know this can be solved with the Find/Change Glyph thing because I've done it myself. But our main layout people are unable/unwilling to deal with such complications, and will complain every single time they have to do it.

What I'm hoping for is some kind of rule that could be applied on text import that would map these glyphs automatically. So far I have found nothing. Does anyone know of anything like this? Thanks!

You could try using the Find/Change by List script. Have your layout folks run it after they place the Word docs. I've written about some other scripts that make it even easier to use (though I'm not sure they work with Glyph queries).

      I'll check that out. Thanks!
