We publish scientific journals, with the articles posting in color online before being printed with grayscale images (with some images being printed in color for a fee). Each article has a spot color (the same one) on the title page, so, for the print version, we currently convert our PDFs to grayscale then replace the title page with its color equivalent. We use an RGB workflow that converts any color images to CMYK for the press-ready PDFs; is there a way to convert the images only to grayscale while preserving our title-page spot color? Thanks!

I don’t know of a means in ID. You can use Acrobat, Tools, Convert Colors, though. You would set the drop down in the Matching Criteria section for Object Type to Image. Then on the right-hand side, Convert to Profile, Conversion Profile would be set to your choice of installed grayscale profiles.

Try on a copy of your PDF and check using Acrobat’s Preflight Profiles to make sure the Pantone is untouched and the images are gray.

That seems to have worked perfectly — thank you! I’m sending the test file off to our printer to make sure they don’t have any issues with it, but it looked in preflight. This will save us a lot of time — thank you again!
