      Greetings!
I am working on a book catalogue, each page will have one or more text frame with autor, title, subtitle, code etc.
The pagination process is quite a nightmare since I wasn’t provided a comprehensive excel file from the beginning and most of the text was added when it was made available. Anyway, that’s not a problem, I use all kinds of styles ang grep tricks to make it work.
What I’d like to do, once the catalogue is done, is to extract the useful infos in a separate excel file (I could use it in the next catalogues, this is a returning client and I would do also next ones).
I already use data merge and had no problem mapping xml tags on the infos I’d like to export but I can’t seem to be able to export them in a file I could use as a base for data merges in the future. What I need is a “reverse” data merge of sorts, from indd to excel. The excels I exported are messy and every info, even if in the same box (or linked boxex) ends up on a different line and creates lots of double entries…
Is there a way to do it?
I hope I was clear enough, can also attach an exmple file if needed.
      Thanks!

That is a fascinating idea, Laura! I do not know any easy way to do this. But maybe someone could write a script that exports text based on paragraph style… like, “export a text file, but only paragraphs with these styles.”

I think one problem could be the order of the text. Unless it is all in one story…?

There are tools out there for exporting text, such as: https://www.rorohiko.com/wordpress/indesign-downloads/textexporter-4/

      Thank you David!
Actually exporting all the text is not a problem, I’d only need to export a few tagged words (not the whole paragraph) in an excel table. The text is always in one story (sometimes in linked text boxes but same text flow).
What I find strange is Data merge accepts only files formatted in a certain way, but then it can’t do the reverse operation… Too bad, I’ll have to find a workaround….

Perhaps if you applied a character style to those words… that would “tag” them. Then a script could be written to just grab all the words that are tagged with that character style and write it to a text file.

It might help if you showed an example of how the text might appear in the story.
