When I try to import an Excel Spreadsheet into an InDesign file, I get the error alert: “Cannot place this file. No filter found for requested operation.”

I have drawn a text box, selected the Place command, made sure Import Options is enabled, double clicked on my .xlsx file and then that error comes up.

      What’s going wrong?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I had the same problem: I received an excel table from my client, but I don’t have excel, so I made necessary changes using google sheets. InDesign does not recognise the google sheet file, even if I save it as excel.
I solved this by opening the google sheets file in Numbers (I’m on Mac…) and re-exporting it as excel from there, using the Advanced option to save as .xls (Excel 1997-2004 compatible).

What worked for me was saving the Excel file as a .csv before importing it into InDesign. The .xlsx format can sometimes be finicky with InDesign, especially if there are formulas or other complex elements. Also, double-check that your Excel sheet doesn’t have any merged cells—those can mess things up too.

I remember reading some good tips on https://www.myexcelonline.com/ that really helped clean up my Excel file before importing. It might be worth checking out if you’re still having trouble!
