      Hi,

I've this strange thing with an image or photo I'm editing in Photoshop. Once done, I click save, and getting this message like: “cannot save, file is in use” or something. That's correct, because I've opened it straight from Indesign. So when I close that particular Indesign file, I now can save the photoshop file. The thing is that this error message doesn't always appear, even with the Indesign open. Anyone noticed this as well?

More details. What version of ID? What version of Photoshop? What SPECIFIC operating system?

I get that error when: I use Edit Original in InDesign, but it opens in the wrong program (such as Preview on the Mac), so I go and open it in Photoshop manually (or use Edit With in InDesign). Now, when I go to save, it says it's already open. Why? Because 65% of the time I forget to close the image in Preview (or whatever app it first opened in).

Doesn't sound like that's your issue, but it's the most common similar issue for me.

Dave–apologies for going off topic, but why do the photos/pics open up in the wrong app? InDesign bug or Apple's? I never have any problems since I made sure artwork opened up in the correct app via the “get info” dialogue box.

      {as an aside–I'm still getting that math thing}

You can learn more about why images open in the “wrong” program here:

As for the math captcha… sorry 'bout that. I hope we can find a way to fix in in the next couple of weeks.

Bob, I'm using for both ID/PS CS4, Mac OSX 10.5.8.

David, that's not the case since I always use “edith with”…

Btw. it's not really bothering me, but I found it really weird, don't you?

      Hi Eelco,

I used to get this annoying problem all the time, but I've found that if I just go back to the InDesign document and save that, the file I have open in PhotoShop will save with no problem. I don't know how that works, it just does, even when I've saved the InDesign document BEFORE I invoke the Edit Original command…

      Hope that helps…

Thanks Harls, I will give it a try.

Edit: just got the chance to test it, but didn't work :-(

There was a known issue with this behavior in Windows, but on stumped on the Mac.

Sorry to hear that mate, it works for me…

I think it's an OS problem. I have noticed that even though I tell the OS to open .jpg, .tif, etc in Photoshop it sometimes opens in Preview. And the same thing with PDFs. I tell my Mac to open PDFs in Acrobat, but sometimes it will open one in Preview.

But I've noticed this problem more since going to Snow Leopard.

David–thanks for the link for that article. I had read it before. That's why I was confused about why you were having problems. I thought that you had followed the advice and was wondering why you were having problems as well.

@docbud, yeah I don't remember getting that error when using Tiger. I'll keep you guys posted.
