Equations are pictures, how to make "editable"??

I’m running into more and more Word documents that have equations as “pictures” instead of editable (MathType equations). MathType website claims this is from the autosave feature in Word, and once done, there is no return (how handy!!). Other on-line posts suggest “saving as” which doesn’t work (still end up with pictures). Pictures are not acceptable (wrong fonts, size, lead etc.) I must be able to reformat or have to retype! YUKK!!!!

How are other people dealing with this? I found a program on-line, ExtendOffice – Professional Add-ins and Tools for Microsoft Office. Not much money, but well worth it if it works. Has anyone tried this, and does it work as promised? Or is there some other magic bullet? Retyping from scratch in MathType is the LAST and not good option.

I can ask the author for a new file, what should I specify to not get the same problem?

I have several older versions of Word, all present the file the same way. I would renew subscription for Word 365 if that was the fix.
      thanks all!

I can’t tell if you’re trying to do this in Word or InDesign. This is obviously an InDesign forum.
Here are some tools you can use for math in InDesign:

I believe that inMath from movemen can import Word equations:

I also found this forum thread: https://creativepro.com/topic/free-script-for-using-mathtype-equation-with-indesign-6-cs4
