      Hi There,

I’m looking for a way of getting equal space above and below quoted paragraphs without using a baseline shift. In a block of text somewhat like this:

Here is a paragraph using the Paragraph Style Body text. I’ve called this paragraph [BT 1]
Here is a paragraph using the Paragraph Style Quoted text. I’ve called this paragraph [QT 1]
Here is another paragraph using the Paragraph Style Body text. I’ve called this paragraph [BT 2]

The problem is that the Body text has to align to grid, but Quoted text should not.

Current preferences and paragraphs styles are:

Document Preferences > Grids: Increment Every 12pt

      Body text
      Size: 9.5pt / Leading: 12pt
      Align to Grid: All

      Quoted text
      Size: 8.5pt / Leading 10.5pt
      Left Indent: 10pt
      Space Before: 6pt
      Space After: 6pt
      Align to Grid: None

Instead of the Space Before and Space After having a fixed value, is there a way of getting equal space above and below the quoted text, taking into account the vertical positions of the end of [BT 1] and the beginning of [BT 2]?

At the moment I’m baseline shifting the Quoted text para so that it’s visually centered.

Probably far easier to put the quoted text inside a one-celled table, or an in-line (or anchored) frame.
Here are some articles on vertically centering text:

Thanks David. The one-celled table could be the fix.

Does the quoted text have to be 8.5/10.5pt?

My standard solution for this is to have a baseline grid that’s half the body text leading (so in this case 6pt). All copy can then be set to align to the grid: block quotes are set to span columns, allowing me to build a 6pt space before and after into the stylesheet.

I know it doesn’t quite answer your query but I thought it might help ;-)

Thanks Brian. Yes, I’m afraid it’s legacy layout that can’t easily be altered. But the idea of halving the grid is interesting & might help with some other things.
