ePub to Kindle … ?

I am somewhat surprised that the various Kindle devices display books in such a wide variety of ways.

Have jumped through the many (many, many … if you include setting up the app and plugins and plugins and plugins and plugins …) hoops I finally arrived at a few tried and tested methods of converting a perfectly fine .epub to .mobi. Not too bad on a Kindle Fire (some issues, but I think I can resolve those), but the e-ink Kindles are a disaster. I have AI files that are placed as section breaks (and set to convert to PNG), but these all show up as stretched-to-fit full-page fuzzy monsters on any e-ink preview. (edit: set them to display inline – better, but very large on Kindle DX).

      Huh?

Neither version will honour the Contents that has been created (visible and functioning in iBooks).

And hints MASSIVELY appreciated … before I finally go running and screaming down my street hurling insults at every lamppost along the way …
