      Hi all.

I'm after a little free advice and hope someone may be able to help.

The publishing company where I work are currently typesetting a 600–700 Medical guide. In an attempt to cut costs the client is looking for us to create an automatic index (rather than recruiting a professional indexer). I am presuming that a word list will be supplied but this is yet to be confirmed.

The client has now decided that an EPUB version is also required and that the index needs to link to the subject matter (obviously instead of a page number reference).

I am wondering what the best practice might be to achieve this. I am aware of Sonar Bookends and emailed Virginia Systems who informed me that SB could create the index fine but it could not create a linked Index for an EPUB.

Is anyone aware of another third party plugin that might achieve this or indeed is InDesign (I am on CS5.5) capable of this in itself? We are hoping to upgrade to CS6 soon but it probably won't be in time for this project.

      Regards

      Rob

There are tools for making indexes based on character styles or a word list (such as the indexmatic script), but making a linked index in EPUB is actually far harder than you'd think. I think there are some scripts around that help with it, but I'm not sure where.

      Hi Rob,

together with Marijan Tompa – a very smart scripter from Serbia – I developed a script, which converts an InDesign index to an ePub-Hyperlink-based index. So exactly what you need. By the way; his script maintains all the formatting you chose while generating the print-version index. Mail him at tomaxxi@gmail.com and let him know that I recommended him ;-).

Do they undestand what an EPUB really is? Because with any eReader I've encountered, you can just search for the word you want and get taken right to the section. So I can't see why a word based index would even be useful…
