editorial-production workflow solutions with InDesign

Does anyone have any experience with automated solutions used in conjunction with InDesign for production workflow? I’m specifically interested in finding a solution for the workflow between production and editorial in my company.

Our current process starts with the editorial dept. sending Word files and photos to the production dept. for laying out in InDesign; edits to the stories are done in InCopy by the editorial staff, from which paper proofs are made to sign off on for approval. Our paginating is done in InDesign by creating a document with all the pages for the publication which we then print as thumbnails to tabloid-size paper. All updates to the dummy are done manually in this InDesign document, and then new printouts of the thumbnails are made and distributed to everyone in each department (editorial, production and sales). But there has to be a faster, more efficient way of doing all this.

I’ve been looking at vjoon k4, WoodWing, Censhare, Blanchard Systems, Emagine by Rhapsody Media and Blinkplan but the entire concept of these workflow systems is new to me. I’m trying to figure out how they work and if any of these systems would be a good fit for our company. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi, i have been using vjoon k4 the last 7 years for our magazine. It is very flexible and it can be used to automate many of the task that you are mentioning.
If k4 is useful for your production i cant say, give it a try by contacting one of the resellers or ask me something more specific.

We are producing a magazine in 33 local editions with the staff spread in 9 different regional locations around the country, Sweden.
