Edit object style clears overrides on all objects based on that style

Object styles is misbehaving. Two problems.
      1. Whatever object style I click on, with or without an object selected, becomes the default object style. I’ve tried dragging the little default icon back to [Basic text frame], I’ve tried selecting [Basic text frame] from the panel menu but whatever style I click on next becomes the default. How do I get the default to stay put?
      2. When I edit an object style, either by double clicking the style name or right clicking on a style name and selecting “edit” from the menu, InDesign clears all overrides from ALL objects to which that style has been applied or any object with a style based on the style I’ve clicked on. Why would I need to have overrides? Because “Next style” in my paragraph styles is not always what I need to apply.
      Please help.
      Thanks,
      Kirsten
