      So recently we’ve started with a more Adobe friendly workflow when sending to our printer – exporting PDFs with a printer approved PDF preset but we’re encountering the problem that any drop shadows, outer glows or other effects that are applied in Indesign export as CMYK on an otherwise Greyscale page. Is there any way to get around this and force the white outer glows or black drop shadows used to be purely greyscale?

      I have checked the colors of the whites/blacks used and they are purely black/white. I’m at a loss.

      Megan,

      It’s hard to say without seeing your file or the PDF settings, here are a few things:

      InDesign:
      1. Swatches->Add Unnamed Colors (confirm there aren’t hidden colors) (Are there spot colors in the rest of the document?)
      2. Window->Output->Separations Preview (uncheck black to confirm no other colors)
      3. Make sure Black is chosen in your Effects (drop shadow, etc)

      Acrobat:
      1. Output->Color Conversion->change to No Color Conversion
      2. Try a different Compatibility, i.e Acrobat 8/9, or PDF x/1a:2001

      …and of course, export to IDML!

      Worth a shot, anyway.

      Thanks, this is what I am actually looking for, in fact I am also inspired and motivated from the prints I have done at [advertising link removed], and I am been informed that they were also using the same aspects.
