      Hello!

My company has just switched over from Quark to InDesign (finally!) but we are having a few teething issues.

Our major issue at the moment is the drop shadow – shadows that are black are appearing white in print. They look fine in the pdf in acrobat, but on the proofs back from the printers, the previews and the actual magazines they are white.

I’m sure it’s something I’m doing wrong but can’t figure it out. I’ve tried upping the opacity of the black shadow but the problem persists. Would flattening the pdf change anything?

Any light shed on this would be fantastic.

      Thanks – Kate

Is the background a spot color or a process color?

Hello – thanks for the response. Background is a process colour – generally we overlay text on a photo, in this case the front cover of the magazine.

It’s not a white box behind the text but the drop shadow itself that appears white. I don’t know why it’s happening!

      Thank you

Weird. And it’s only when you print? What if you make it a PDF? What if you turn on View > Overprint Preview? If they look good in the PDF, I would likely be blaming the printer.

      I know! It’s really strange.

It looks perfect to me on Overprint Preview. When we complete the pages they are loaded into a database called FileMaker which builds the magazine – could the pdfs be changed there.

We publish the magazines online and you can see on this link where the white drop shadow is happening: https://content.yudu.com/Library/A2uz4o/NewmarketandElyLivin/resources/index.htm?referrerUrl=http%3A%2F%2Ffree.yudu.com%2Fitem%2Fdetails%2F1907615%2FNewmarket-and-Ely-Living-June-July-2014

It looks terrible but the first pdf I create before I load it into FileMaker looks fine.

Thank you for your responses though I really do appreciate it. Would flattening the pdf change anything?

Apparently it’s not filemaker – could it be a setting in the process of creating the pdf?
