Hi everybody have a problem thats driving me nuts !
PC CS6 32bit – have uninstalled (prefs & defaults) then re-installed so my latest test was clean install

      Here goes….

      open new doc
everything on defaults from new installation
      draw text box
      filled with placeholder text,
everything fine export to pdf looks fine

new layer or same layer (seems to makes no difference) drew another box no text just empty text box , pdf looks fine

So now i have two layers, text box on each on with text one empty

on new layer I selected box Object>Effects>Drop Shadow clicked preview …all text becomes uberbold ! its like bold text with extra bold for luck !
anybody able to put me right please, i’ve tried all sorts of things but still not solved

I’ve been using ID for a few years and up till this have never used drop shadow and I really cant believe how hard this is to sort out, at the very least its unintuitive
many thanks if you can offer some ideas

Is it because the Drop Shadow is being applied to all the text in the box, making it look like it has turned bold?

If you add a white fill to the text box and then target the Fill in the Effects panel (rather than Object) then you should get a drop shadow on the box rather than all the text in it.

I have almost a similar problem.

A textbox filled with letters, font style regular (no problem).
On the same page, a photo.jpg (no problem).
But if I add a dropshadow to the photo (or any other box for that matter) the text becomes “bold and jagged”.
It doesn´t matter if text and photo are one the same or different layers.
If I remove the dropshadow, the text reverts to fine and crisp “regular” style.

Here is the reason and solution for my problem.

Every time a textbox has a background fill of NONE, the problem occurs.
So by choosing anything than NONE, say paper, the problem disappears.

      baz, two things to try:

-If you have Spot Colors in your document, change them to Process
      – When exporting to PDF, choose: Standard: PDF/X-1a:2001

Baz, thing that you are experiencing is InDesign changing of preview, rather than any other problem…

When you aplly any kind of transparency or effect, preview of all elements become boldish…
I also saw this change first time I started using Indesign…
Don’t worry, pdf will come OK, it is just a preview

You can eliminate this preview change by turning transparency to OFF in PREFERENCES / DISPLAY PREFORMANCE / TRANSPARENCY, but than you won’t be able to see any effect regarding to it (example multiply, drop shadow etc…) until you press presentation view (shift+w) or display preview HIGH

      Cheers
