I’m having a problem I’ve never seen before with importing footnotes. I received a Word document with 35 footnotes, and all appears normal in Word. But when I import it into InDesign all the footnote numbering is doubled. The footnote references in the body text, instead of being numbered 1, 2, 3, etc., are numbered 11, 22, 33, and so forth. The numbers next to the footnote text at the bottom of the pages show the initial number, then an en-space, and then the same number repeated again: 1en-space1, 2en-space2, 3en-space3, etc.

If I try to delete the first digit from the first footnote reference in the body text—changing 11 to 1—then the numbers next to the footnote text at the bottom of the pages change to 1en-space2, 2en-space3, 3en-space4, and so forth. It’s as if there are two footnote references for every single instance of footnote text.

Things I’ve tried: converting the footnotes to endnotes and then back again in Word before importing. Importing with styles. Importing without styles. Importing without styles but keeping local formatting. Importing without local formatting or styles. Saving the Word doc (originally a .docx file) as a .doc file. Saving the Word file as an RTF file. Asking the editor to open the Word file, examine it for any weirdness, and resave it on her end (she’s on Windows, I’m on Mac). Opening the Word doc in Pages, then resaving it out as a Word .doc file. Opening the file in Google Docs, then saving it out as a Word .doc file.

Nothing is fixing the issue. Any ideas what could be going on here?
