Doubble up on Paragraph Styles in Style Group

I have an annoying problem, that i hope some of you InDesign-sharks can help med solve.

In my InDesign document I have a lot of Paragraph Styles – most of them connected by Next Style and autoactivated by Object Styles. The Paragraph Styles are organised in Styles Groups. So far so good. I have also made a library for som of the most common tables ect. but when I drag the elements from the library to my document, all the Paragraph Styles that appears in the library elements “double up” and is placed outside the Style Groups – as if the Paragraph Styles did not excist in the first way.

How can I make the Paragraph Styles in the Style Groups “visible” so that I can avoid having more Styles with the same name – and all the problems following this?

Are the styles in the library in style groups, too?

The problem is that I think InDesign sees the style groups as part of the name. For example, you can have “para1” inside a style group (folder) called “A” and another “para1” inside a group called “B” — so InDesign actually thinks of these as called “A:para1” and “B:para1”. The result is that if you bring in some text with a “para1” style, InDesign says “I do not have that style!” and it creates a new one (outside of the style groups).

However, my use of the colon “:” is not exactly true. I have not found any way to name styles so that it knows to put them into the style groups.

I have been complaining to Adobe for many years about this. And this is one reason why I cannot recommend using style groups/folders. It is very frustrating.

      Hi David

Thanks for you answer. Yes, the styles used in the library files is the ones picked from the exactely same stylegroups. Your description of the problem is just as I figured it – and I have deleted all the style groups. Quite a pity, cause it would be nice to group the styles. I have about 65 Paragraph Styles in the document :-(

Nitin: As I said above, I don’t think there is any way to name styles for style groups. Instead, you would probably need to write a script that runs as part of the XML import.
