Does the span column feature in InD 6 allow for custom column widths?

I think the answer is no. If that's confirmed, I'm hoping someone in the community can help.

I have a book whose design utilizes heads on the left and body text on the right. Currently, the template uses separate anchored text boxes to fit the heads in a 1-inch space on the left and tabs to flow the body on the right. There has to be a better way!

I thought I could use the span column feature and adjust the columns to different widths, but it doesn't appear you can do that. I don't want to resort to tables, which would be too cumbersome in a large book, nor do I want to deal with tabs.

Does anyone have any other ideas? Any help would be appreciated!

Unfortunately, no… the anchored object method is one of the better ways to accomplish this, sadly.

It may not be practical in your case but I have done this in the past by using one text box and an indent on the body text, no extracting heads required.

David and Tim, thank you for your replies. I'll go the route Tim mentioned. Coincidentally, this project is a conversion from FrameMaker, which easily allowed for sideheads. It's a useful feature so hopefully someday Adobe will implement in InDesign. Thanks again!
