      Hi there,

I am new to InDesign. Have played around a bit and watched many tutorials. Loving the program! I am designing a book for a friend and he would like to print it. The only problem is – the printer is in Holland and his settings are different to the print settings from my country (SA). Also, his instructions are in Dutch – as a result, I am not sure what I need to change on my end to get the book print ready.
My settings are: A4 (297mm width and 210 height). The current bleed is 5mm. The top margin is 12mm, bottom 20mm, inside 12mm and outside 13mm.
His mail instructions: totale breedte 657 mm; totale hoogte 256 mm – Netto snijmaat boekblok: 297 x 210 mm. Breedte rugbord 11 mm, Hoogte rugbord 216 mm. Breedte bord 293 mm, Hoogte bord 216 mm. Kneep per zijde 10 mm, inslagen rondom 20 mm. Oversteek bord t.o.v. boekblok 3 mm.
Can anyone help me correctly change my settings to meet his requirements?

Okay, I hacked this with Google Translate:

      totale breedte = Total Width
      totale hoogte = Total Height

The others get pretty useless and bizarre, so I’m not going to reprint them (though my personal favorite is “cross the board as far as the book block 3 mm. Whatever that actually means in Dutch and English would be another matter…)

Short answer: Don’t rely on Google Translate or on my knowledge of Dutch. Oh, and it’d be good to know what sort of book this is (the numbers might explain themselves better then).

I can tell you that setting page sizes would involve changing your document settings in “document presets > define” (in your File menu). You’ll likely want to adjust margins too (in the Layout menu under “margins and columns”). It looks by his numbers like he wants a larger book (picture/illustated?) book since A4 is not usually standard for book prints. I’m in the U.S., so I can’t comment on international book sizes, but A4 is unusual except for copy paper, isn’t it? Book sizes usually don’t match printer paper in the US, at least.

Adell, your settings are typical Indesign document settings and seem to refer only to the inside work, not the cover.

The Dutch instructions seem to be about the (hard?) cover or the printed sheet to go around the coverboards, not the inside book block.
      – total width 657 mm, total height 256 mm (netto trim size of book block 297 x 210 mm)
      – width of spine 11 mm, height of back board 216 mm, width of board 293 mm, height of board 216 mm
      – kneep is the hinge part between the spine board and cover boards (don’t know the English term) 10 mm on each side
      – inslagen is part of cover wrapped around the edge of the board to the inside, so the wrap margin is 20 mm
      – the cover board juts out 3 mm all around (oversteek)

So it strikes me that the settings don’t need changing, but work is needed for a cover.

      Hope this helps.

      Hello, thanks all!!

@ Joel, thanks for your google effort – I also tried that and as you said it got a bit bizarre. The book is a coffee table type book (online album)… not really designed for printing. In the end, I did manage to change the page size with the page tool and liquid layout (after a few tries, I might add!). I had to create space inside that the text doesn’t flow into the gutter/ spine of the book.

@JA van Hespen, you are indeed correct – the settings are a hard cover that wraps around the edge and not the inside of the book. What a relief!

I am really grateful for your helpful comments.
