      Hi Guys,

Whenever I restart InDesign for whatever reason I get this message…

I deleted prefs a while back to clear up a problem I was having with my swatch pallette and this annoying PITA persisted. Anyone have any clue what it's about?

      Thanks!

Close InDesign and search for a file called .idlk be sure to find hidden files too.

      More here about it https://creativepro.com/can…..k-file.php

Basically I think it's trying to recover a document, this happens after indesign crashes and you were in the middle of a project. A .idlk file is generated when you open a file, so that your InDesign file is locked and nobody else can have it open at the same time. When you open InDesign and it sees a .idlk file that wasn't deleted after the file was closed, it will try to recover the InDesign file from it's automatic backup files.

If you try to restore from the dialog box you posted and it keeps bottoming out, you can try searching for the idlk file and delete it, and the prompt won't come up again.

You should also check your backup files which should be located (on Windows) C:Documents and SettingshankApplication DataAdobeInDesignVersion 5.0InDesign Recovery

And you can remove recovery files from there, but you should make double sure that you're not deleting files that you need.

Try clicking No, to clear the Recovery files.

But if that still doesn't work, then, yes, I agree with the part about removing the files from “InDesign Recovery”. Sometimes files get stuck in there for some reason.

Clicking “no” ten or twenty times and deleting the recover data worked. Thank you both so much for your help!

Actually what needs to be done is you need to delete the entire InDesign Recovery folder, which may hold multiple temp files. You can see a free movie on how to do so in my Lynda.com title on Troubleshooting InDesign:

      https://www.lynda.com/home/Disp…..lpk2=47762

Deleting the entire folder doesn't harm ID at all … and rebuilding preferences doesn't touch the Recovery Files.

Hank Scorpio (love that episode btw), your path is correct for CS2 (v4) Windows, but for CS3 (v5) and CS4 (v6), the Recovery folder was moved to a new place, inside a Caches folder.

      Mac: User/Library/Caches/InDesign/[version]/InDesignRecovery

Windows XP: C:Documents and Settings[Your_Account]Local SettingsApplication DataAdobeInDesign[version]CachesInDesign Recovery

      Windows 7: C:Users[Your_Account]AppDataLocalAdobeInDesign[version]CachesInDesign Recovery

Thanks to Bob L. for the Windows 7 path!
