In Portuguese, whenever we have a hifenated word breaking at the end of a line, we have to put another hifen in the beginning of the next line. Like this:

      … aconteceu-

      -lhe…

For years, I've been doing this manually, searching all hifens and replacing them by hifen + line break +hifen where necessary.

Then recently I discovered that I could do this automatically by replacing all regular hifens by a discretionary hifen + non-breaking hifen. That way, if a hifenated word was in the middle of a line, it would have its normal hifen, and if it stood at the end of the line, it would break, put an hifen there and the nonbreaking hifen would go in the beggining of the next line.

So this was perfect. The problem is that lately that isn't working – now, for some strange reason, it just doesn't put the hifen at the end of the line… it's like this:

      … aconteceu

      -lhe…

I noticed this when a document that was ok suddenly lost all the end of line hifens…

Now the strangest thing is that this only happens on the PC! I opened the same document both on the PC and on the Mac – on the PC, the hifen is missing, on the Mac, it's there! And it was working fine a couple of days ago on the PC as well!!

It happens both on my PC and on my co-worker. It happens in documents that were behaving normally before, and in brand new documents. I rebuilt the programs preferences and it's still the same!

What's going on?! Help meeeeee! I want my hifens baaaaack! And I want my Mac baaaaaack!

I'm desperate, does it show? ;)
