Does anyone know a quick way (perhaps a keyboard shortcut) that will remove the black rectangle around highlighted text? I have some text selected, and I want to manipulate it, but I want that black rectangle to disappear so that I can accurately see how it will look.

Thank you everyone for your help.

There is a shortcut key for Deselect All (look in your Edit menu), but then you cannot modify it anymore. Way smarter to use Character styles; just create any blank one and apply it to the text. Then go to the definition of that character style, check the Preview box, and start a-modifying. When done, you can OK the character style; or, when you have changed a bit too much, hit the “Reset to Base” button (make sure it's based on [None] for that) and start over with your tinkering.

Another nice feature of ID is that you can open an additional window on your text. Although the 'other' window does not show the selections, it will be updated live while you are changing stuff in the other window!

Here's a blog post on this:

Here's one more trick: You can command/ctrl-click-and-hold on the frame. Don't move it; just hold down the mouse button. That makes the highlight go away temporarily.

What about using the Story Editor?

Eugene, editing text in the Story Editor does change it “live” in my running text, but ID redraws (part of) the screen in the Lowest Possible Quality. Strange — it doesn't do that with the Two windows trick.

That is very annoying LOL – I had never noticed that behaviour before? But usually when I'm in the story editor it's because I'm typing in overset text or something (making the adjustment to layout after the text input).

Eh where's Tile Horizontally or Vertically gone from Window>Arrange?

      I hate Horizontal Tiling!!!

Oh it's in a Button in Cs5 on the top control panel – weird.

How does that thing work? I set it to Vertical Allign, then I went to Window>arrange>tile and it arranged them horizontally.

So I changed it back to vertical and went to Window>Tile and it arranged them vertically?

Now I can't use Window>Arrange>Tile to arrange them any other way except for Vertically – I have to use the Button in the control panel. Which is ok – not very exciting – just findiing it very strange.

Thank you everyone for your quick answers. I got a response back the same day I posted it. Removing the highlighted portion of selected text was something I have been trying to do for years!
