Data Merge to Apply Hyperlinks to Glyphs

I work on publications that have lengthy sections of business listings (for things like restaurants, hotels, etc.). The publications are both printed and exported as interactive PDFs for digital publication. Most entries have one or more social media icon (displayed via a glyph font), that needs to serve as a live hyperlink in the PDF.

Currently, these listings are maintained in a spreadsheet. I have to manually select each icon, create a hyperlink, and paste in the appropriate URL. We don’t currently use data merge to flow these into the document, but are moving in that direction.

Is there any plugin or script that anyone is aware of that would allow me to automate the process of hyperlinking numerous identical glyphs with individual URLs stored in a spreadsheet along with the rest of the listings information?

If you regularly produces such publications, I would recommend using EasyCatalog. You could create your custom hyperlinks in just a blink with just a inch of setup.
But at the very least you could use datamerge to first populate the data and then run a script to create the hyperlinks. But once again, if you build catalogs and directories very often, you should consider EasyCatalog.

      Thanks, Loïc for the advice.

I’ve looked at EasyCatalog, and it looks promising. I am thinking about using their free trial to test it and see how much it helps, but it looks like it may be overkill for my purposes.

You also mentioned using data merge, then using a script to create the links. That is what I am already planning to do/doing to link all the ordinary URLs in each entry, but I can’t figure out how to craft a script that would take the Facebook and twitter URLs as input, and result in just a single glyph in a different font as output. I have no experience with creating code, and have tried in vain to find something like this elsewhere.

No problem. What would be those links that bother you ? I can’t figure the syntax that could be an issue.
