A current project is a graphic novel taking place in Spanish California of the early 1800s. I thought it might be cool if some graphics had distressed edges, like a painting or a sheet of paper with frayed and tattered edges. I began customizing a few graphics in Photoshop, with special “painter’s brushes,” but wondered if there weren’t ready made frames or distressed edges in an “action” series. Thought I saw something like that for sale once.

Then I wondered if it’s possible to create a variety of custom frames right in InDesign. Click one frame style and — voila! — distressed paper edges. Click another frame style and there’s your paint brush edge. Any suggestions?

Maybe need a break from the project. After “distressing” the edges of three graphics, I started thinking, “forget it.” Maybe I’m too stressed to distress.

Distressed edges are possible in a vector layout tool, like InDesign, but they’re much easier to create in pixels.
There are templates you can get that do distressed or rough edges… I remember seeing some cool stuff from this company: https://psmgraphix.com/collections/frame-elements
