      Hi,
I’m currently working on a master grid for several books. I’m using layers to separate objets like text, images, background, guides …
I’ve got problem trying to associate column guides to a “guide” layer… I can do it with all the guides I ‘ve defined for my grid (rows, sub rows, margins, headers etc) but not for column guides. In fact, Indesign displays itself those “column guides” based on the document format parameters…
So even Indesign interface use the name of column guides… it’s not exactly the same thing. Am I wrong ? What is the way for me ? Do I need to explicitely put column guides on the master (my_column_guide) ? But in this case I do not find a way to show/Hide the “Indesign_column_guide” to avoid confusion….

      any advice ?
      thanks in advance
      François

The guides are associated with Layer 1.
But not only that layer they are a bit special.

You can see with by turning visibility off of Layer 1 then hide guides and the column guides will hide,
But the column guides will appear when you show guides or when Layer 1 is visible.
You can rename Layer 1 to be your text layer and and then you can sort of control the visibility of the column guides.

      thank you for your answer.
unfortunately this does not seem to be the case in my environment.
if I uncheck all the layers, column guides are stil here …
Reason why I suspect column guides not be “true” guides …

You also have to turn Layer 1 visibility off and then Hide Guides you need to do both or the guides will only dim not go away completely.
View > Guides and Grids > Hide Guides
Then the Column Guides will not be visible.

If you delete the original Layer 1 then the column guides will hide a per the guides you add.

humm …ok what you say is I can Hide or diplay guides using this way. But it wil display or hide ALL the guides not only a particular one. That’s the reason I’ve tried to combine this command with layers to obtain more granularity…. it woks fine except for column guides

You could create a document without columns in the Primary Text Frame, then there will be no column guides,
The just add a text box to you page master and also guides to say layer Text, Then you can turn the guides no or off with the layers.

The columns in the Primary Text Frame appear to be a bit like the default font in the InDesign file, deeply embedded into the structure of the file.

Yeah, there’s no way to make the column guides go away, and no way to put them on a layer. But you could, for example, make the left and right margins zero, which would make the column guides the same as the page edge. Then you could draw your own column guides… but they’re not really the same.

The column guides are sort of linked to Layer 1 (default layer in the document when it is created). Hence when you turns hide guides and turn off Layer 1 or delete Layer 1 the column guides can hide as per other guides.

Merci pour votre aide / thank you for your help…

I will define my own column guides and will put them on a specific layer. That’s way I will have a clear picture for present and futures books
      regards

Pourquoi, si le fond des pages est “blanc”, ne pas changer la couleur des guides de colonne en … blanc, pour les faire disparaître ?

Yes … excellent idea :-) but original question was to find a way to “link” specific column guides to a particular layer. As Indesign column guides are not really guides it seems we can’t do this thing.

      ;-)

yes we do agree but as we don’t always see everything I was wondering if there something planned … or a trick?
IMHO from a semantic point of view, these are not real guides or real column objects … well, it is a point of view.

      :-)
