      Hi

Does anyone know if you are able to to insert a portion of a paragraph style as a text variable.?

My situation is: I'm doing layout on a book and the Chapter Heading is the running footer at the bottom of the page (Text Variable). Only problem is I don't want the whole Chapter Heading as it's too long. I just want the text up to the colon.

EG. This is the part I want: this part I don't want to appear in the footer but it will appear in the Heading.

Any advice would really be appreciated as it's a 400pg book and would hate to do a manual overide.

      Thanks so much

Do a nested style “up to” and insert a colon

Then this will apply a character style up to the colon

You can then set the Text Variable to be a Running Head Character style.

Right click this and save it to your computer (it's an indesign file CS5) https://dl.dropbox.com/u/172107…..style.indd

Thank you so much Eugene… especially for going to the effort of providing an indesign file and screenshot.

It's much appreciated and answered my question perfectly.

      Thanks again.

No problem. It's one of my favourite techniques, funny enough.

One of the biggest problems I had with a book, 3,200 pages, I was doing in CS2 was that there were 4 running heads per spread that changed intermittently page by page. When CS3 came out with Running Head text variables it was a major reason for me to upgrade.

I've been around the block with tricks regarding getting Running Heads to appear.

      Glad it helped :)

If you ever need to do really complex running heads you should consider
