I'm running InDesign CS3 on a Mac (10.5.8) at work. I've been using this for at least 10 months without any problems.

Now my InDesign says it can't save the document and tells me to do a “save as” instead. I try to do a “save as” (saving it in a different location with a different name) and InDesign quits on me. When I go to start InDesign back up, it says a serious error has occurred and that the file is still open (locked) and it won't open. (I paraphrased that.) Then I have to restart the whole computer in order for InDesign to work again.

I tried trashing my preferences. When that didn't work I did a complete Uninstall/Deactivate and Reinstall/Reactivate and it's still happening.

I can't find this problem on any forums, so I guess I'm the first? Lucky me. Any suggestions/solutions?

Did you open this file from Quark into InDesign?

I had a problem with that until I started selecting everything on the page and “ungrouping” several times. Now it is great.

If you can get the file open, you can also try to export to .inx and then reopen into CS3. That often clears out accumulated “file crud”.

I figuered out the problem! It was a miscommunication between InDesign & my printer software. We run a Fiery program and a month or so ago I created print presets to make my life easier. (Yeah, right.) Every time I used a print preset (for example to print a 2-sided spread on 11×17) I would successfully print, then click save before closing my document, but it wouldn't let me save.

I deleted all of my print presets and so far I haven't had the problem again.

      Hooray!
