I've also been known to go three months between haircuts.

A client recently said he was getting me a bunch of indd files from the ad agency that is no longer doing his stuff, files I'm to use for templates, editing, etc. The files are all CS4. I'm in CS2 so I decided that was reason enough to finally upgrade. I've yet to upgrade my G5 PPC's OS to Leopard, however both system 10.5 and my virgin copy of CS5 are waiting patiently on my desk for me to back everything up.

I will install both in the next day or two, but the question is whether I should have any concerns making the CS2>CS5 leap. I've seen the indd demos with the new CS5 features, but where can I find everything else that came along post-CS2?

      In the Help?

But … you're in for some treats! (Well — as long as you don't need indexes …)

      * GREP is a programmers' way of finding text; it's vastly superior to ID's “normal” searching (it takes some time to get the basics, but after that …)

      * You can even apply character styles automatically. Imagine every time you see a word “Wow!” you have to make it Comic Sans. Put this in a GREP style and ID will automatically do that for you!

      * Ehm. … Did you read all of InDesignSecrets.com of the past 5 years?

Have you thought about using your favorite search engine to search for something like “InDesign CS3 new features” and “InDesign CS4 new features”? That ought to give a lot of info (most of it useless no doubt).

Also Lynda.com might still have the training videos for CS3 and CS4, and you could try LayersMagazine.com and similar sites for videos and articles.

      I also went from CS2 to CS5.

I watched the lynda.com “What's new in CSx…” tutorials on the ones in between, but then decided to watch David Blatner's Essential Training for CS5. Even though I've used InDesign for years, starting from the beginning reminded me of stuff I'd forgotten. So that's what I would recommend. And as you go along, you'll pick up on the differences between CS2 and CS5 without needing to know when the changes came about. It's 10.5 hours, but for $25 you can take a whole month to watch it all if you want.

I have some sad news for you. CS5 does not run on Power PC computers like the G4 and G5. It is Intel only. If you upgraded to leopard on your G5 it will not run the software.

You know the feeling you get when you see flashing lights in the rear view mirror? I could've sworn I checked the system requirements before I bought. Obviously I didn't check close enough. Anyone offer a CS4 “downgrade?” I hadn't tried installing it yet nor removed the disks from the box, however I did remove the plastic wrap, so I'm screwed. I could afford the software upgrade but not a whole new system.

      Rats.
