Cross References to Text Variables

      I'm using text variables (chapter number, specifically) in all figure references, figure legends, tables and boxes in a large book. We frequently x-ref to these items from other chapters, and when I select the text (for example: “Fig. 19-5”) the chapter number, which is a variable text, disappears leaving my source “See Fig. -5”

      I'm loving the variable text, as i just updated a complete book in under 5 mintues to allow chapters rearanging, but I can no longer correctly x-ref without manually entering the chapter number, which would have to occur immediately before prepress to remain correct.

      Ideas? Will any 3rd party utilities assist with this?

      If you check the cross-reference definitions there is a chapter number cross reference tag that you can use

      <chapNum/>
