Does it matter? I have spreads and it looks fine. But I think the index function doesn’t work except in book?

If it works for you, it doesnt matter :)

If InDesign is slow, use the book-function, otherwise there is nothing wrong with using one doc.
      The index function works anywere.

      THANK YOU!

I’d personally keep it one document.

Working on a 440+ pp book as we speak. Single document. I’d avoid the book panel if at all possible. It adds an unnecessary level of complexity and fiddlyness (is that a word?) that is best avoided. No problem indexing a single document.

If InDesign goes slow, make sure each chapter in the book is its own story, and not one single, long, threaded story spanning 200+ pages! Avoid too many anchored objects, and any use of span/split columns, or columns in general, can cause serious slowdowns as well….

At my company, we have to have single-document files and they have to be one single, long-threaded story.

On the subject of books …

I create service & operating manuals for heavy equipment. Some sections are universal to ALL machines, some are universal to a class of machinery, and some are custom.

Would a book make sense in this application? I could have the safety sections ready to pop into every manual, the controls instructions ready to add to every water truck, the precommissioning information, maintenance schedules, etc …

Even the safety section isn’t 100% universal. There’s one page I remove for anything that doesn’t have a tank (water, fuel, whatever) on it.

Would y’all recommend the book feature here, or continue working with my templates as they are?
