      Hi,

I am “a bit” frustrated by a growing number of InDesign crashes. I would say at least once a day, InDesign randomly and suddenly crashes, sometimes even without any document open, or right after closing one, and on the next relaunch, all my preferences are lost. Text, interface, presets. You can imagine it gets old really fast…

I thought about uninstalling everything and start clean, but maybe there is something else I could do?

ID 15.0.3 on Mac OS 10.14.6

Thanks in advance for your time and advices, have a nice day.

I don’t know about the crash, but one way that might help retain your preferences is to get them set up as you like, then quit — if the quit doesn’t crash, they would (probably) stick. And of course, if you change one mid-session, close your files and quit again.

And for those ID people deep into the inner workings: Is there a preference file one could save elsewhere, then copy back if needed? The list of recent documents might return to what’s in that file — if that file contains the list — but at least the preferences would be there.

Thanks Tim, I’ll go and look about a single pref file that I could save somewhere “just in case”.

I really don’t care about recent documents, so if only those are lost, that is still a progress.

The article below talks about where the prefs are stored. Tim’s suggestion of setting-and-quitting is a good one (prefs are only saved when you quit).

But if you’re crashing daily, something is wrong. My guess is that you have an outdated plug-in (like a font management auto-activation plug-in) or a corrupted document or font or graphic or something that is causing that.

      Thanks for the article.

I have tried to trash and reset, plus the set-quit tip, we’ll see… fingers crossed.

What seems weird is that the trashed preferences problem came out of the blue. I don’t change them that much, and usually quit InDesign manually at the end of the day, saving/closing each doc before. So in these last few days, at least one set of preferences should have been saved, but then again, one random crash and all is reset; I would perhaps not even have noticed if my interface color choice did not suddenly go from white to black.

I’ll explore the plugin option. By chance I don’t use much, Font Explorer X Pro auto-activation indeed, Zevrix Output Factory, and the “how could one function without it” Multi-Find/Change.

I also re-installed TeaCup Pattern Maker this last week for a recurrent annual project, but I cannot remember if the crashes went worse after that.

That should make for a nice week-end… ^__^

Olivier, you get extra bonus points for using PatternMaker! :-)

I love all those plug-ins, but they can be an issue after even a small update. Like Adobe released 15.0.2 in February… even little “dot releases” like that can break plug-ins. Not always, but they can.
