Corrupted ID file – Cannot globally modify styles

I’m working on a second edition of a workbook originally published in 2019, where almost every style on the new mockup has changed: font, font size, leading, colour, frame thickness, symbols, etc. The template for the workbook is new, the old pages are saved individually in a library, then dropped into the new template, and finally the fonts and the styles are updated. When I select something for the first time I erase the old style and replace it with the new, leaving only a few adjustments to do. Except for the chapter I’m working on (the 8th one), which crashes as soon as I try to replace a style, whether caracter, paragraph or object. I spent 2 days trying to fix this, but nothing worked, so I am doing all those updates manually, question by question, object by object, page by page.

Find and Replace works on one instance at a time, not finding anything if I click Change All. Trying to modify the old styles directly to match the new ones also causes a crash, so does trying to clean the Swatch palette. Opening an idml format of the file does not fix the problem either, nor getting rid of the Preferences.

Has anybody ever come across a similar problem? I checked the other chapters, global style replacement works fine (including Find and Replace), so it must be the file itself that is damaged. Any idea how I could fix this?

IDML is the best way to remove corruption in the file itself. If that doesn’t work, then I’d start wondering about elements inside the document. For example: are there any fonts used in this file that aren’t in other? what if you delete all the images, Save As, and then try changes? What if you try deleting all the color swatches, then do a Save As, and then try changes? I know those are crazy, radical things, but it may be helpful in identifying what part of the file is messed up.

When you say you erase the old style, do you mean you delete it and when it says it’s in use, you choose the new style? If you try replacing it with some other old style that was already there, does that work?

To erase the old style: as you say, I delete when it says it’s in use and choose the new style.

I will delete things like you mentioned and let you know how it goes.

How it crashes: it makes the changes, and then after 4 or 5 seconds the spinning beach ball appears and keeps turning until I force quit the application. I guess until it hits the problem further down the document, or something like that…

I tried everything you suggested but it did not work.

Last year the publishing house had decided to use Google fonts and the fonts included with the Adobe CC subscription exclusively in all their published material, including replacing all the fonts when reediting their bestsellers (which is what I’m doing at the moment). After a hellish weekend where things kept getting worse crashwise, I gave up and went to watch a movie. While relaxing, a word came to my mind: fonts… I rushed back to work, removed and redownloaded the Adobe fonts I was using and, well, ID stopped crashing, and I did more work in an hour than the whole previous day. And still not crashing today.

So, not sure it was the only problem, I keep my fingers crossed… and I decided to include watching a movie in my bag of tools when facing mysterious technical problems.

Watching a movie is one of my favorite “solutions.” :-)

Linda, if you want me to take a look at it, Package it, zip it, and email me a link directly. I’ll see if the problem happens to me. (I think you have my email right? Just “david at…”

Not sure I had the right email address, I just sent you a link for WeTransfer. If you do not receive it, please send me a current address…

I finished that first proof without any crashes by applying all the new styles locally — no global style replacement — and by redoing from scratch the 3 pages that had kept crashing. Made it to the deadline. Fingers crossed that the next proofs will be crashless.

Great to hear it, Linda. Wow. What a project! I hope everything goes smoothly from now on.
