OK, so I have read through some of the information on corrupted files. I am on Windows 7 Pro, running INDD 2017CC. The file is a 60-page operation manual. It crashed when I placed an image and then tried to export a print PDF with interactive components. INDD crashes if I try to open the file, and I created a copy and changed the file extension to IDML, but that is behaving the same. I am working off a server. Our IT guy may be able to get me last night’s version, but I’d really rather recover this one since it contained significant edits. I am pretty sure that last linked file is somehow causing a problem, since during the “open” or “recover file” status bar progress, it trips along merrily until the last link (73 of 73), and then stops working. Initially I left it to run while I went to lunch hoping it just needed time, but when I came back it was not responding and I had to force close. Since then, if I try again, INDD just shuts down.

I had a very similar problem with an 88-page conference program. I found out that the culprit was a full-page PDF ad. When I saved the ad as PNG, the whole thing worked very well, exported nicely, and printed.

Were you able to open your file at all? After saving the ad as a PNG, how did you fix the link if the file wouldn’t open?

I tried renaming my image that was (possibly) causing the problem, thinking that maybe if the link was missing, I’d at least be able to get the file to open, but that didn’t work.

I had that happen once and it was indeed a piece of art.

Try to rename the art folder (or move it) so ID won’t link to it when you try to open the file.

I’ve had similar issues with bad fonts–so I would open the ID file without the fonts turned on.

Unfortunately while I can and did rename the image, I can’t alter the folder it resides in. It is part of our engineering document management system (Solidworks PDM) and other users would lose information if I moved or renamed that folder.

I did save it as idml and succeeded in opening the file. I immediately re linked to the new graphic and voilĂ ! I gave the graphic the very same name but with the png extension.

Hmm. I couldn’t get my IDML file to open either unfortunately.

IT recovered yesterday’s version so I’ll just re do my edits … Sure wish I could have recovered it somehow, though.

I can definitely see why you can’t remove it or rename it. Thankfully, in my work environment, we work on our individual computers and then back up the files. We don’t work across the network on servers or anything. But I would have thought that renaming it would make it appear as missing and ID would not try to update it.

I’m not sure of your workflow–but I duplicate copies of the ID files I am working on several times throughout the day (on my local drive). That way–if I can’t recover it, at least I’ve only lost a few hours of work and not an entire day.

We use Retrospect for lunchtime and evening backups, but I still do the duplicates.
