Converting bulk documents from Metric to Imperial Measurements

I've always found this site to be a good reference for all things InDesign, but I have a question that I can't really find an answer for anywhere.

The problem is that we have a library of over 8,000 InDesign files that are based on metric measurements for printing in the UK. We need to convert these to US imperial sizes and measurements (for example, A4 to US letter) without as little squashing/squeezing of the design elements as possible. I understand that some manual intervention will be required, but even if we could automate a percentage of them that would help. Ideally, a plug in or action that 'anchors' elements say 5mm from the page edge, then adjusts the page size.

I'm open to ideas on this, has anyone done anything similar?

      Regards

      Simon

I'd be happier if you were trying to move 8,000 INDD files from imperial to metric, not for technical reasons but political ones. (And yes, I'm even American!) ;)

Anyway, the Liquid Layout rules in CS6 are meant to help with this kind of issue, but there's no way to batch process them. That said, I'm sure this is possible with a relatively simple script.

Another option: ProScale plug-in from Gluon (which appears to still be for sale, though I think Quark bought gluon):

      Hi Simon,

You might want to try this – Batcher is a tool to automate the processing of ID documents with a script via drag/drop. It should allow you to drag/drop a folder with 8000 files onto an icon, and have them processed.

It's freshly written, so it's not perfect yet, but it might be enough to get you going.
