      Hi All,

I’m new to the forum but have been a long time reader of Indesign Secrets. I’m pretty familiar with almost all of the indesign features, however i’ve come across a problem of which I don’t know if there is a solution.

I have a 100 page catalogue. Within it there are references to various pages, for example “See page 23 for fabrics”, or “See page 90 for T&C’s”.
These page references are dotted around the document. I was thinking, wouldn’t it be good if there was a way of linking that text to automatically update if I change the pagination. Now I’ve done some research in to cross-references and Text anchors, but i’m not sure this is the way to do it.

Anyone any thoughts on this and if what i’m asking is possible? Would certainly save a whole lot of amends and would ensure page numbers throughout are correct at all times.

      Thanks
      Chris

Yes, that is exactly what the Cross-References feature is designed to do.

In which case, I am unable to get it to work. Is there a tutorial that you can point me to that shows how to do it. I was having problems making text anchors and getting my references to link to those particular pages.

      Thanks

I usually use paragraph styles rather than text anchors. But it works fine. If you want the x-ref to point to the text anchor, you need to choose “Text Anchor” from the “Link To” pop-up menu at the top of the New Cross-Reference dialog box, and also choose “Text Anchor Name & Page Number” from the Format pop-up menu in the middle of the dialog box.

I’ll try to write this up with illustrations as a blog post soon.

Thanks very much, would be a useful read. I’ve struggled getting it to work, and don’t use paragraph styles within the document at the moment, therefore text anchors would work best for me I believe.

      Thanks
