      Hi,

I am finishing a book and I am struggling with running headers.
Other running headers are working fine, except the Chapter number (and I would like to avoid creating 10 master pages).
The book has 10 chapters and I would to have the chapter number (a box grpahic) in the top corners of the book.
However, when I am using the Chapter Number variable in the running header, it only shows number 1 throughout the whole book, it does not change with the real chapter number. I tried changing the numbering to automatic, then custom, but nothing worked, it always shows number 1.
Does anyone know what could be the problem, or if I am doing something wrong (or how to set up the chapter number running header ?).
      Thank you in advance.

I admit I’ve never used the chapter number variable. But can you explain more of what you are trying to accomplish.

Do you want the numbering on the actual chapter opening page or the chapter number to appear on text pages in that small box?

When I have chapter numbers, I have them in place normally.

If the text pages require them in the corners of the text pages, I create a new running head variable and do it that way.

I never use the chapter number variable.

      Hello Dwayne,

      thank you for your reply.
I have a small box in the top header on each page and there I wanted to have the chapter number in each chapter.
I do not understand why, but the running header simply did not work.
But in the end I found a way; divided the pages into sections and then used the section marker instead of the running header – this worked ok.
      Wish you a nice day.

I’m glad you figured out a work around.

When I have something similar, I create a second running head style and use that for the chapter numbers.

      Hi Martin,

Thanks for your post. I’m encountering a similar problem. Could you kindly show me how you got ‘dividing the pages into sections’ to work?

You can apply the start of a new section on every page you like (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pt52plh_iuw), but you can not apply more than one section to a single page.

      Hello Tamba,

sorry for a late response, I was off work for a while (summer).
Did you find help you were looking for from the video that Dieter posted?
