I have a complex multi-cell, multi-column, multi-row table which includes a number of paragraph styles and a handfull of character styles within it. I try to avoid having any text which is not allocated an appropriate style (says he, feeling InDesign self-righteous!) Recently I found a need to change the dimensions of the whole table (resized page margins) by choosing Table/Select/Table and then Shift-Click-dragging the bottom right-hand corner out a little to the new margin.

Sadly, I then discovered that all the text within the table had increased slightly in size (eg., what should have been 10pt became 10.201pt) and any text with the cursor inside it showed the +plus-sign beside the appropriate style in the style pallet. It has taken me ages to go through the entire table and correct them by clicking on the “Clear overrides” button at the bottom of the style pallet. The job is done but I am wondering of there is a way I could avoid this happening in the future?

      Hi Tom,
I don’t see that happen when I change the size of the table by shift-dragging the lower-right corner of the table itself. It doesn’t change the font sizes at all for me. I wonder if perhaps you Command-Shift-dragged the text frame itself? That would scale the contents of the frame.

As for getting rid of all the local formatting, you can select all the cells of the table (place text cursor inside frame and then press Command-Option-A or Ctrl-Alt-A) and then click the Remove Local Overrides button at the bottom of the Paragraph Styles panel. That should do it all in one go.

You are almost certainly right, David. I don’t always remember key combinations correctly — after all, mostly I grab them with muscle memory rather than consciously thinking about it — and it is highly likely that the Command key was involved along with the Shift key. But thank you for the hint about bulk use of the Clear Overrides button. I didn’t realise I could do it with (many) more than one style selected.

I did say it was a complex table and perhaps should also have mentioned that many of the cells have another table within them. That would make the bulk use of Clear Overrides just a tad more difficult.

Don’t grab the whole table and resize it. Just change the width of the columns and the rows to accommodate the new table size. The text should stay the same size.
