Can anyone point me to a script that will fix the punctuation of contractions (and possessives). Especially when importing from Word documents, contractions and possessives come in with single right quotation marks instead of a bona fide apostrophes. As part of final clean up, I’d like to sweep through the book and change them to apostrophes.

I have attempted this with GREP, but the large number of contraction variations has me stymied, e.g. ‘t, ‘s, ‘ll, ‘ve, ‘re, ‘m, ’tis, etc.

      Thanks.

      Cheers!

When you import from MSWord, do you choose Show Import Options and check Options > Use Typographer’s Quotes?

Hi, Lindsey. Yes, I do that sometimes, not always (it depends on how “ugly” the source document is). It requires a secret Ctrl-Z trick (or the Insert > Symbols menu) to force an apostrophe in Word so writers tend not to do it (or certainly not consistently). I don’t think “Use Typographer’s Quotes” can sort that out.
