    I need to find and replace “left” with “right” and “right” with “left” in different selections of text. Is there a way to do this with a GREP expression or otherwise? Running two searches will not work…if I change “left” to “right” then run the next search/replace for “right” to “left” I will only end up in my original quandary.

    That is quite a quandary. One method would be to:
    1. Search for left and apply a character style that does nothing
    2. Search for right and change it to “left”
    3. Search for text in that character style and change it to right (without the character style)
    You could do this all “at once” with findchangebytext script, or with automatication.com’s MultiFindChange
